Prompt ID

A prompt contains three components: Prompt ID, Prompt Text, and Prompt Type. (These are the three columns in the Prompts Manager.)

The Prompt ID is a unique code containing up to 50 characters. For user-created prompts, the first character is always a number  sign (#). For SoftPro prompts, the first character is always an underscorecharacter (_).

NOTE: Never use the pipe character (|) in Prompt ID or Prompt Text.

The Prompt ID is the code that you can reference in ReadyDocs, merge documents, or Look-up table entries. For example, you create a prompt with the Prompts Manager to ask for a date to be included as a footer. You could assign the prompt the ID of #FOOTER. The prompt text could read "Please enter the date." In the ReadyDoc or merge document, you would enter the Prompt ID surrounded by double-brackets to reference the prompt. For example,

{{#FOOTER}}

When this document is merged, the #FOOTER prompt appears in the Prompts Dialog and the user enters the date in the Prompt Data field to answer it.

NOTE: The Prompt ID for any existing prompt cannot be edited. If you need to change the Prompt ID for a user prompt, you will need to create a new one. You can delete the prompt with the wrong Prompt ID by selecting it and clicking Delete on the Prompts Manager.
